William Ginsberg would be proud if he could see the business he began 80 years ago.
While styles have changed and his quaint shop has evolved from selling women’s coats
and suits to exclusively bridal and evening wear, Rainbow’s commitment to quality and
service has never wavered. In 1927, Mr. Ginsberg opened the original The Rainbow
Shops Ltd. on a site that is presently occupied by Lloyd D. Jackson Square. With business
prospering, Rainbow relocated to 105 King Street East in 1951 where it has operated
ever since. Also an historic site, the building formerly housed the Hamilton Spectator
newspaper. The Rainbow Shops Ltd. at that time was the first all-bridal wear shop in North America.
By 1977, Rainbow had been operating for years under the stewardship of Mr. Ginsberg’s son Joel.
The 2nd-generation Ginsberg took it upon himself to present Southern Ontario with the most
stylish European fashions, from bridal to swim wear. This necessitated countless buying
trips over the 25 years that Joel Ginsberg was at the helm of Rainbow. The lifestyle
abroad became very attractive and Joel Ginsberg became interested in selling Rainbow at
the end of the 1970s. Joel’s sister, Beverly, wanted a 3rd-generation Ginsberg to consider
the challenge and opportunity to continue the Rainbow legacy… Beverly’s son, Barry Sobel,
was the man and 3rd generation Ginsberg up to the task.
With three decades of experience, Barry Sobel is still pampering brides with the same
simple philosophy that his grandfather so successfully mastered: courteous, knowledgeable,
personal service providing the best possible bridal wear purchase experience.

Fortunately,
Mr. Sobel is surrounded by a team of talented, dedicated staff, several of whom themselves
have been with Rainbow for decades.
In the summer of 2007, Mr. Sobel and Rainbow celebrated a dual milestone: Rainbow celebrates its
80th anniversary and Mr. Sobel’s daughter, Mara, was married in Hamilton. Rainbow staff have
an unmatched and enviable relationship with leading manufacturers of bridal wear in North America,
a profound knowledge of all the distinct needs, special attention, and unrivaled service required of
today’s bride and bridal party. Mr. Sobel is equipped with first-hand knowledge and belief of what
every proud parent should experience when attending the wedding of a child.
